The Rev. Easton E. Madeira

1908-1911

Rev. E.E. Madeira was called to be rector of St. James in September of 1908. His ministry at St. James may best be characterized by the development of that inspiring, artistic, and helpful branch of worship which centers around music. The new rector was a splendid and accomplished musician and had the musician's temperament which is quick and deep seated.

Rev. Madeira did a splendid thing for the church when he was able to induce the ever generous and interested donor to the church, The Honorable J.C. McKinney, to present the new and complete Austin Organ. He developed a large, vested choir and many unusually inspiring musical services were conducted by him. He was also instumental in developing the musical instinct and talent of the city by conducting cantatas, oratorios, and concerts. Rev. Madeira was an interesting and forceful preacher and a faithful pastor.

Easton Madeira's family consisted of his wife and three sons, Easton, Dashiel, and Augustus. He resigned from St. James in 1911 to serve a parish in St. Peterburg, Florida. He later moved to Tampa, Florida with his wife.

Between his resignation, and the arrival of the next rector, Rev. Wm. E. Pickells, most acceptably served as interim priest.
