Training a Cairn Terrier is a must. They
are very content to let you be the "alpha" animal.
Cairns learn quickly and will easily add a few tricks to the
standard commands. Remember that the training must be kept fun
and not repetitive. Unlike golden or Labrador retrievers, Cairns
won't do endless repetitions.
Cairn Terriers are easy to housetrain to go outside. Like their
wild cousins, they instinctively know not to soil your den. Housetraining
depends on your taking the dog outside and rewarding it each
time it responds to your command to begin. Over a month, the
dog should acquire the behavior. In case of a mistake in the
house, be sure to clean the spot with an enzyme based cleaner.
Other types of cleaner don't remove the scent and your dog will
continue to mark the spot.
Because they chase almost anything that moves, it is unrealistic
to expect a Cairn to heel without error. Even at shows, the terrier
group is noted for its impetuousness. Nevertheless, basic obedience
training will curb these inborn behaviors if the training is
applied regularly and consistently.
If you decide to fence in an enclosure, be sure to bury the bottom
of the fence at least one foot. Cairns love to dig and will look
at your fence as a challenge to be undermined.
