Cairn
Terriers are among the healthiest of dogs. The most notable problem
is an allergic reaction to fleas. This is best treated by a veterinarian
with prescription products to prevent an initial or chronic infestation.
Like most small dogs, Cairns are susceptible to floating knees
(luxating patellas). This condition can result in minimal
to almost debilitating restrictions on activity. A veterinarian
can quickly diagnose this problem. Surgery is prescribed in only
the most severe cases.
Sometimes hair will irritate the dog's eyes causing them to become
red and swollen. An occasional rinsing with a boric eye wash
or other similar product should prevent this.
All in all, you should have few health problems. Cairns often
live well into their middle teens.
