CATS
INTERNET (CSONLINE) QUESTIONS
1
Q. How many network connections are
in each room?
A. All
double rooms have two connections and triple rooms have three connections.
2
Q. If I live in a residence hall
room, do I need a phone to get connected to the Internet?
A. No.
Connections can be made through an Ethernet cable.
You will need to have a Network Card in your computer to use this
service. The network cards and
installation of them are available for purchase at the CATS Center.
3
Q. What is the difference between Ethernet and dial-up Internet access?
A. On campus Internet connections can be made through the Ethernet, which
requires a Network Interface Card and transmits information at a very high speed.
It does not tie up a phone line like a modem. A Dial-up connection can be
made both on and off campus through a phone line with a maximum
speed of 56K and requires a modem in your PC.
4
Q. How do I obtain the NIC card and
Ethernet cable and what is the cost?
A. These
will be available at the CATS center. The
recommended 3COM network card is priced at $67.00. Ethernet patch cables come in varying lengths and are priced
at: 25’ @ $12.00 and 50' @
$19.00. The network card price does not include installation and
configuration. Installation is $10.00 and configuration is $10.00.
3Com
Ethernet cards can also be installed by any competent computer service center in
a student’s home-town.
5
Q. What do I need to do to connect
to the Internet using a MAC?
A. This
depends on which type of MAC you have. The
IMAC has Ethernet capabilities built into the main board. The older MAC’s can use a standard NIC provided they have
either the PCI or ISA slots. Otherwise
there is a proprietary NIC card for the MAC that will need to be purchased.
The recommended NIC for the MAC (assuming you can use a PCI card) is
available from the CATS center at $69.00 plus $10.00 for installation and $10.00
for configuration.
6
Q. Who do I call about payment plans for CSOnline’s Internet service?
A. Call ALLTEL (1-800-255-8357) and a representative will answer
questions about billing and take orders for all Internet
accounts both on and off campus. The rates are included on the order forms. Any questions concerning Internet information and pricing of software, hardware, or
configuration should be referred to the CATS Center at 877-519-CATS.
7
Q. What should I use for the login,
password, and e-mail address?
A. There
is a standard format for the student login which is “s_first initial. middle
initial, last
name” (i.e.: For John Lee Doe it
would be “s_jldoe”). This will
also be the e-mail address only it will have “@clarion.edu at the end of their
email address. For University
students the e-mail address in this example would be “s_jldoe@clarion.edu”.
For all others, the e-mail address would be “anything_you_want@csonline.net”.
The exception would be if this login or e-mail address were already being
used. You may choose your own
passwords. Passwords can be numbers or letters or any mixture up to 5 - 10
digits long, but you
must use lower case letters.
8
Q. Internet passwords, who sees
them and how do I get one?
A. You will choose your Internet password when you sign up
for services. This password cannot
be given to anyone without the proper security key words. You only need a
password if you are using modem to connect to the Internet. Ethernet users
will not need a password.
9
Q. How often can I change my
Internet password?
A.
Passwords can be
changed once a month. It can be
changed more frequently only if there is a good cause (i.e:
someone hacked into your password or saw you enter your password).
10
Q. Can the Internet sites I visit
be seen by anyone? If they can be
tracked, who is the person or office that can legally view this list?
A.
Anyone
who has access to your password can look at your history of sites on your
computer unless you delete it. Technically
and legally CSOnline can monitor this activity.
The only CSOnline personnel that have access to this information are
CSOnline administrative personnel. This
information is only shared when the proper legal authorities request the
information, and it is only released pursuant to a Court Order (subpoena or
search warrant). This information
is used only for network diagnostic and performance issues or where illegal or
detrimental activity is occurring. While
this information can and may be tracked, CSOnline does not actively monitor this
information on a regular schedule.

Q. Will we have to discontinue our
Internet for the month of Christmas break?
If we do not, will we get billed for that month?
A. For
billing options for the 2001 Christmas break call 1-800-255-8357, and a
representative will explain your options.
12 Q. I already
signed up for Internet Service, but I can't get my computer to work.
